”Tuon Galleria Ars Liberaan pari piirustusta ja akvarellia, koska rakastan kuvataiteen perinteisimpiä lajeja: käsin tehtyjä muotokuvia, maisemia, asetelmia ja allegorioita, eli vertauskuvallisia esityksiä. Minusta on hauskaa yrittää jatkaa perinnettä, katsoa millaista ihmiskuvaa ja maailmankatsomusta vaikkapa Max Beckmann, Alice Neel tai Lena Cronqvist ovat tauluissaan ilmentäneet, ja yrittää kulkea heidän jalanjäljillään tai keskustella heidän kanssaan kuvan keinoin.
Perinteisen kuvataiteen esittäminen on minulle tärkeää myös, koska olen viime vuosina olen tehnyt enemmän kirjailijan, teatteri-, elokuva- ja oopperaohjaajan ja valokuvataiteilijan töitä kuin taidemaalarin hommia. Haluan näyttää, etten suinkaan ole jättänyt taulutouhuja taakseni.
Laitan esille myös pari lyhytelokuvaa tai videoteosta, jotka ovat syntyneet ohjaamieni teatteriesitysten ja oopperoiden sivutuotteena. Vaikka ne ovat syntyneet isomman hankkeen ohessa, ovat ne minulle taiteellisesti yhtä tärkeitä kuin suurimuotoisemmat teokseni.
Teoksissani käsittelen mm. seuraavia kysymyksiä. Miten meidän pitäisi kohdella muita lajeja, kun tiedämme, ettei biologian näkökulmasta esimerkiksi minulla ja naudalla ole olennaista eroa? Entä mitä tehdä ilmastonmuutokselle ja mitä ajatella kuudennesta joukkosukupuutosta — ensimmäisestä ihmisen aiheuttamasta? Onko sukupuolia kaksi vai enemmän? Arvostamme rauhaa ja myötätuntoa, mutta olemme luoneet maailman, joka perustuu ennennäkemättömän tehokkaalle riistolle ja väkivallalle, joka on niin tavallista, että sitä voi olla vaikeaa huomata juuri sen vuoksi, että olemme tottuneet siihen ja tulleet sille sokeiksi. Miten tässä näin kävi ja mitä on tehtävissä? Entä miten suhtautua kuolevaisuuteen — sekä omaan että koko ihmislajin katoavaisuuteen — sellaisella tavalla, ettei kuolevaisuus olisi vain riesa ja elämän varjopuoli, vaan jotain mikä elähdyttää ja ruokkii elämisen intoa? Mitä on onnellisuus, mitä on hyvä elämä?
Näyttelyn nimiteos perustuu muutamaan katkelmaan käsikirjoittamastani ja ohjaamastani esityksestä nimeltä SINUSTA TULEE KOIVU (2017). Se oli kolme ja puolituntinen yhdistelmä tanssia, teatteria, runoutta, dokumenttia ja osallistavia harjoitteita. Tein tänä vuonna huvikseni sen pohjalta kymmenminuuttisen videoteoksen nimeltä KOIVUTANSSI. Ars Liberassa se on ensimmäistä kertaa esillä.
Ars Liberan tapaiset pienet, usein lähes ilman rahoitusta toimivat galleriat ja esiintymispaikat ovat yhtä tärkeä osa taide-elämää kuin pääkirjastot, sinfoniaorkesterit ja suuret museot. Näissä riippumattomissa ja yleensä taiteilijavetoisissa tiloissa taide on usein vapaimmillaan ja rohkeimmillaan.
Juuri ennen tätä näyttelyä ohjasin Kansallisoopperassa esitetyn oopperan nimeltä AUTUUS, jonka Antti Auvinen sävelsi. Tuon Ars Liberaan myös päivitetyn version lyhytelokuvasta nimeltä TAVALLISTA TAPPAMISTA, joka perustuu yhteen kohtaukseen tästä oopperasta.
Laitan tähän näyttelyyn esille vain teoksia, jotka on tehty ilman rahaa, kannustaakseni muitakin tekemään taidetta myös silloin, kun mitään ns. tuotantobudjettia ei ole. Tietenkin tämä on vain osatotuus, sillä olen taidemaailman hyväosaisia, niitä jotka ovat saaneet paljon apurahoja ja palkkaa taiteen tekemisestä. Myös edellämainitut tanssiesitykset ja oopperat ovat olleet hyvin rahoitettuja hankkeita. Toisaalta on kuitenkin niin, että Ars Liberaan tuomieni piirustusten ja leffojen tekemiseen en ole tarvinnut lainkaan rahaa, vaan vain aikaa, tekemisen intoa ja pari kaveria.

”I will be presenting some drawings and watercolors at Gallery Ars Libera, because I adore the more traditional forms of visual art: hand-made portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and allegories. It is enjoyable to me to try continuing this tradition, to see what kinds of human representations and worldviews artists such as Max Beckmann, Alice Neel, or Lena Cronqvist have brought forth in their paintings, and to try and walk in their footsteps or have dialogue with them through the medium of pictures.
Presenting classical visual art is also important to me for the fact that I have in recent years focused my creative energies as an author; as a theater, film, and opera director; and as a photographer, rather than as a painter. I want to prove that I certainly haven’t finished with my visual impulses.
I will also be showing some short films or video pieces, which were produced as byproducts of my directing work in the theater and opera. Even though they were born side by side with a larger production, they are as important to me artistically as the very grandest of my works.
In my works I approach the following questions. How should we treat other species, when we know biologically that there is very little difference between myself and a cow? And what to do about the climate crisis, and what to think about the sixth mass extinction — the first created by humans? Are there only two genders, or more on a spectrum? We appreciate peace and compassion, and yet we have created a world that is based on unprecedented levels of exploitation and violence, which are so commonplace that it can scarcely be identified precisely because we have become accustomed to it, and blind to it. How did this happen, and what can we do? And how should we apply our attitudes toward mortality — our own as well as the prospect of our whole species disappearing — in a way that sees death as more than just a nuisance and a dark side of life, but something that vitalizes and feeds the joy of life itself? What is happiness, what is a good life?
The namesake work of the exhibition is based on a few passages from a performance I wrote and directed called SINUSTA TULEE KOIVU (”You will become a birch tree”, 2017). That show was a three-and-a-half-hour amalgam of dance, theater, poetry, documentary, and interactive exercises. This year, for fun, I made a ten-minute video artwork based on it, called KOIVUTANSSI (a.k.a. DANCE LIKE A BIRCH TREE). I will debut it at Ars Libera for the first time.
Small, mini-budget galleries and venues such as Ars Libera are just as essential to the well-being of the art world as are libraries, symphony orchestras, and grandiose museums. These independent and usually artist-driven spaces are home to art at its freest and boldest.
Right before this exhibition I directed an opera at the National Opera called AUTUUS (”Bliss”), which Antti Auvinen composed. I will also bring to Ars Libera an updated version of my short film TAVALLISTA TAPPAMISTA (”Normal killing”), which is based on a particular scene in said opera.
In this exhibition I am only showing pieces that I made without funding, in order to encourage others to also make art even when there is no proper production budget to speak of. This is admittedly only part of the truth, as I am well-to-do in the art world; I have received many grants and paychecks for my art. However, I didn’t need a penny to produce the drawings and films on view here in Ars Libera — all I needed was time, the excitement of creation, and a few friends.
