Kuinka paljon olemme valmiita ottamaan luonnolta saadaksemme itsellemme hieman
enemmän? Lisää rahaa, mukavuutta, valtaa tai tavaraa. Lopulta mikään niistä ei seuraa
meitä hautaan.

Veera Konstin näyttelyn Vanitas vanitatum – Turhuuksien turhuus nimi viittaa 1600-luvun
maalaustaiteen vanitas-perinteeseen, jonka avulla muistutettiin vaurastuneita ihmisiä
maallisen omaisuuden, vallan ja kauneuden katoavaisuudesta. Konstin teoksissa sama
ajatus ulottuu ihmisen ja muiden lajien väliseen suhteeseen. Kun kaikki ympärillemme
haalittu lopulta katoaa, mitä muuta kuin tuhoa jää jäljelle niistä valinnoista, joita olemme
tehneet muiden lajien kustannuksella?

Teosten eläimet ovat joskus olleet eläviä olentoja, jotka ovat kuolemansa jälkeen päätyneet
ihmisen täyttäminä näyttelyesineiksi. Aika on tehnyt tehtävänsä eivätkä vuosikymmenten
kuluttamat eläimet ole lopulta enää kelvaneet opetusmateriaaleiksi tai metsästysmuistoiksi.
Konstin töissä ne ovat kuitenkin saaneet uuden merkityksen taiteena ja välttäneet
kohtalonsa jätteenä.

Vakavien aiheiden rinnalla teoksissa ovat läsnä myös musta huumori ja yllättävät
yhdistelmät. Niiden tarkoitus ei ole pelkästään keventää, vaan myös tarjota uusia
näkökulmia siihen, miten katsomme muita lajeja. Valokuvassa pantterin suussa käryää rööki,
veistoksessa naudan vaurioitunut pääkallo on korjattu alumiinista valetuilla proteeseilla, ja
akvaarion pohjalla keramiikkaraakut kostavat keltaiselle metsäkonelelulle.

Näyttely ei pyri tarjoamaan valmiita vastauksia tai kertomaan, mitä katsojan pitäisi ajatella.
Sen sijaan se kutsuu tutkimaan eläimiä, kuolemaa ja omaa suhdettamme luontoon omista
lähtökohdistamme, uteliaisuudella ja kokeilevilla lähestymistavoilla.

Jos näyttely saa vierailijan katsomaan seuraavan kerran lokkia, talousmetsää tai auton alle
jäänyttä eläintä hieman toisin kuin ennen, se on tehnyt tehtävänsä.

Veera Konsti on savonlinnalainen kuva- ja valokuvataiteilija, joka etsii uusia tapoja katsoa
sitä, mitä emme välttämättä tule katsoneeksi. Hänen työskentelynsä perustuu havaintojen,
materiaalien ja ajatusten odottamattomiin kohtaamisiin: täytetty eläin, rikkinäinen esine,
syrjään jäänyt paikka tai muovinen lelu voivat saada uuden merkityksen, kun ne asetetaan
uuteen yhteyteen. Mikään ei ole liian hajonnutta, pölyistä, vaatimatonta tai väärässä
paikassa päätyäkseen katseen kohteeksi.

Valokuvien, veistosten ja installaatiotaiteen keinoin Konsti tarkastelee ihmisen suhdetta
ympäristöönsä, muihin lajeihin ja kuolemaan. Hänen teoksissaan vakavat teemat törmäävät
makaaberiin huumoriin ja yllättäviin rinnastuksiin. Työskentelyä ohjaavat nokkava uteliaisuus
sekä halu kaivaa esiin yhteyksiä, jotka jäävät helposti huomaamatta.

Konsti on valmistunut taiteen maisteriksi Aalto-yliopistosta vuonna 2021 ja taiteellisen työnsä
ohella hän on toiminut myös lehtikuvaajana. Hänet on palkittu vuonna 2022 Jouko Lehtolan
säätiön Nuori sankari -palkinnolla. Konstin teoksia on ollut esillä muun muassa Suomen
valokuvataiteen museossa Helsingissä, Riihisaaren museossa Savonlinnassa sekä muissa
museoissa ja gallerioissa Suomessa ja ulkomailla. Paluumuuttajana ja maakunta-aktivistina
hän tekee työtä sen eteen, että taide olisi nykyistä saavutettavampaa ja näkyvämpi osa
ihmisten arkea myös Itä-Suomessa.

How much are we willing to take from nature in order to gain a little more for ourselves?
More money, comfort, power, or possessions. In the end, none of them follows us to the
grave.

Taking inspiration from 17th century vanitas paintings, a genre created to remind the viewer
(and the newly prosperous of the time) of the transience of worldly wealth, power and
beauty. Veera Konsti expands this idea to encompass the relationship between humans and
other species. When everything we have gathered around ourselves eventually disappears,
what remains except the destruction caused by choices made at the expense of other forms
of life.

The animals in these works were once living creatures that, after their deaths, ended up as
taxidermied exhibition objects created by humans. Time has done its work, and after
decades of wear these animals were no longer considered suitable as educational material
or hunting keepsakes. Through Konsti’s work, however, they have acquired a new meaning
as art and escaped the fate of becoming waste.

Alongside these more serious themes, the works show a dark humour through the creation
of unexpected juxtaposition. While humour is not necessarily the main aim, it serves to offer
new ways of looking at other species. In one photograph, a cigarette smolders in a panther’s
mouth while one of the sculptures shows a damaged cow’s skull repaired with cast
aluminium prostheses. At the bottom of an aquarium, ceramic freshwater mussels take
revenge on a yellow toy forestry machine.

The exhibition does not aim to provide ready-made answers or tell the viewer what they
should think. Instead, it invites us to explore animals, death, and our own relationship with
nature from our own points of departure, with curiosity and an experimental approach.

If this exhibition helps you to look differently at future encounters with seagulls, managed
forestry or even an animal killed by a car, it has served its purpose.

Veera Konsti is a visual artist and photographer based in Savonlinna, Finland. Her work
explores new ways of looking at subjects otherwise overlooked. Built on unexpected
encounters between observations, materials and ideas, her practice gives new meaning to
taxidermied animals, broken objects, overlooked places and plastic toys by placing them in
unfamiliar contexts. Nothing is too damaged, dusty, modest or out of place to become the
focus of attention.

Working across photography, sculpture and installation, Konsti examines the relationship
between humans, the environment, other species and death. Serious themes collide with
macabre humour and unexpected juxtapositions. Her practice is driven by a sharp curiosity
and a desire to uncover connections that often go unnoticed.

Konsti received her Master of Arts degree from Aalto University in 2021. Alongside her
artistic practice, she has also worked as a photojournalist. In 2022, she received the Young
Hero Award from the Jouko Lehtola Foundation. Her work has been exhibited at venues
including the Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki, Riihisaari – Savonlinna Museum,
as well as museums and galleries in Finland and abroad. Having returned to her hometown
of Savonlinna, she is also an active regional advocate, working to make contemporary art
more accessible and a more visible part of everyday life in Eastern Finland.

Animal Studies on teossarja, joka on saanut inspiraationsa viime vuosisadan alkupuoliskon
eläintenhoito-oppaista. Kirjat avaavat ikkunan maatalouden ja eläinsuhteemme murrokseen,
siirtymiseen omavaraistaloudesta kohti tehotuotantoa.

How to Build a Chicken Coop -näyttelyn lähtökohta on vuonna 1928 painettu Pienviljelijän
käsikirja ja siihen sisältyvä Matti Järven kirjoittama kananhoito-osio. Konkreettisen kanalanrakennusprojektin lisäksi se on taiteellinen dokumentaatio elämästä kanojen kanssa
ja kuvaus heistä persoonallisina yksilöinä.

Sanna Nissinen on leppävirtalainen kuvataiteilija, joka on tehnyt myös eläintenhoitajan
opintoja ja lomittajan töitä. Hän tarkastelee monimutkaisia suhteitamme toisenlajisiin
eläimiin sekä jaettua kulttuurihistoriaa, joka määrittää ihmistä lajina enemmän kuin usein
osaamme edes ajatella.

Animal Studies is a series of works inspired by animal husbandry guides from the early half of
the previous century. These books open a window to a turning point in agriculture and our
relationship with animals, as we transitioned from subsistence to factory farming.

How to Build a Chicken Coop is an exhibition whose starting point is The Smallholder’s
Handbook (Pienviljelijän käsikirja) from 1928, and its chicken care section written by Matti
Järvi. In addition to being an actual construction project, it is an artistic documentation of life
with chickens and a depiction of them as individuals with distinctive personalities.

Sanna Nissinen is a visual artist from Leppävirta, with a background in studying animal
husbandry and working as a farm relief worker. She examines our complex relationships with
other species and our shared cultural history, which define humans as a species more than
we can often even imagine.

Artistic practice has been supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.

Jone Mutkan näyttely Picture it on kuvan syntymistä, sen olemassaoloa ja sen muuntumista käsittelevä valokuvapohjaista taidegrafiikkaa, kuvanveistoa ja installaatiota yhdistelevä kokonaisuus. Näyttelyn teokset voi nähdä myös kuvauksina ihmisen muistojen rakentumisesta.

Näyttelyn teokset on toteutettu serigrafialla, johon on usein yhdistelty erilaisia kolmiulotteisia elementtejä. Installaatiot ovat valikoituja pysähdyksiä, jotka paljastavat painetun kuvan syntyprosessin vaiheita painoteollisuudestakin tutun CMYK-värimaailmaan avulla. Lopullinen värivalokuvaa imitoiva vedos tarvitsee aina syntyäkseen syaanin, magentan, keltaisen ja mustan painovärikerroksen.

Teoksissa taidegrafiikka on järjestäytynyt itselleen poikkeavalla tavalla. Yleensä litteät vedokset asettuvat nyt tilaan kolmiulotteisiksi. Niissä on näkyvissä painoprosessin eri vaiheita esimerkiksi revittyinä ja päällekkäin ladottuina kerroksina. Värit ovat erkaantuneet toisistaan tai saattaneet vaihtaa paikkaa keskenään.

Teosten urbaanit kuva-aiheet ovat otoksia Mutkan elämästä viime vuosien varrelta. Lähtökohtana toimiva todellisuuden kuvaajaksi mielletty valokuva antaa teoksissa mielikuvia ja vihjeitä niiden alkuperäisestä kohteesta, mutta teoksiin lisätyt kerrostumat tai häiriöt etäännyttävät ja muovaavat katsojan tapaa tulkita esittävää kuva-aihetta suoraviivaisesti.

Jone Mutka työskentelee taidegrafiikan (mm. serigrafia, puupiirros) ja installaation keinoin. Mutka luo teoksensa usein yhteistyössä erilaisten koneiden, kuten laserleikkurin, prässin tai tietokoneen kanssa. Hänen työskentelynsä keskiössä on tieto ja erilaiset tavat säilöä, toistaa, muuntaa tai vahingoittaa tietoa. Mutka on viime aikoina teoksissaan tutkinut kuvan muodostumisen lisäksi digitaalisen ja fyysisen rajapintoja sekä ihmisen ja koneen välistä yhteistyötä.

Mutka on valmistunut kuvataiteen maisteriksi Taideyliopiston Kuvataideakatemiasta. Hän on osallistunut näyttelyihin kotimaansa lisäksi Euroopassa, Japanissa ja Yhdysvalloissa. Hänen teoksiaan on muun muassa Suomen valtion sekä Jyväskylän taidemuseon kokoelmissa.

Jone Mutka’s exhibition Picture it is a collection of works that combines photo-based printmaking, sculpture, and installation. Show is exploring the creation of an image, its existence, and ways to transform it. The works can also be seen as depictions of how human memories are formed.

The artworks have been made by screen printing, often combined with various three-dimensional elements. The installations on the exhibition are selected paused moments that reveal different stages in the creation of a printed image through the familiar CMYK colour system used widely in the printing industry. A final print that imitates a colour photograph always requires layers of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink.

In these works, printmaking is organised in a way that is often unusual for the medium itself. Prints that are normally flat now occupy space as three-dimensional objects. Different stages of the printing process are visible, for example as torn and overlapping layers. Colours have separated from one another or may even have exchanged places.

The urban imagery featured in the works consists of snapshots from Mutka’s life over recent years. Photography, often regarded as a medium documenting reality, provides hints and impressions of the original subject matter. However, the added layers and disruptions distance the works from their source and reshape the viewer’s straightforward interpretation of the representational imagery.

Jone Mutka works with printmaking techniques (including screen printing and woodcut) as well as installation art. He often creates his works in collaboration with various machines, such as laser cutters, presses, and computers. At the core of his practice are information and the different ways it can be stored, reproduced, transformed, or damaged. In recent years, in addition to investigating image formation, Mutka has explored the boundaries between the digital and the physical, as well as collaboration between humans and machines.

Mutka graduated as an Master of Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of the Arts Helsinki. He has participated in exhibitions not only in Finland but also across Europe, Japan, and the United States. His works are included in the collections of, among others, the Finnish State Art Deposit Collection and the Jyväskylä Art Museum.

Jenni Yppärilän näyttely tarkastelee katoavaisuutta ja ulkopuolisuuden kokemusta. Hiiltyneet nimi viittaa niin konkreettiseen tuhoon kuin mielensisäiseen tuohtumukseen. 

“Teoksissa lähestyn aihetta kuolevien maaseutupaikkojen ja häviävien rakennusten kautta, pohtien ajankuvaa, jossa tietyt alueet ja toiminnat eivät pysy mukana muuttuvassa yhteiskunnassa.” 

Tyhjilleen jääneet rakennukset ovat murroksen merkkejä, jotka seisovat historian ja tulevaisuuden välillä. Teokset heijastavat kokemuksia ja ilmiöitä, joissa kuuluvuuden tunne ympäröivään maailmaa on horjunut.

Näyttelyssä nähdään ensi kertaa videoteos Poltto, joka dokumentoi Yppärilän uran suurimman teoksen tuhoamisen hänen lapsuudenmaisemissaan. Teoksen tuhoaminen toimi protestina vuonna 2024 alkaneille kulttuurileikkauksille. Video ilmentää samalla hienovaraisesti pohjois-pohjanmaalaista mielenmaisemaa ja perhesuhteita. Yhdessä tekeminen ja satunnaiset lauseet paljastavat siteitä ja etäisyyksiä, joita ihmisillä ja ympäröivällä maailmalla on keskenään.

Kokonaisuus peilaa laajempia yhteiskunnallisia ilmiöitä maaseudun tyhjentymisestä yhteyden kaipuuseen ja taiteen merkityksen pohdintaan. Vakavista aiheista huolimatta kokonaisuus pyrkii herättelemään lempeyttä ja myötätuntoa.


Jenni Yppärilä on Helsingissä työskentelevä kuvataiteilija, joka on tunnettu rakennuksia kuvaavista kolmiulotteisista maalauksista. Hän on vuodesta 2012 dokumentoinut havaintojaan rakennetusta ympäristöstä Suomessa ja ulkomailla. Yppärilän kiinnostus rakennuksiin on ensisijaisesti sosiologinen. Rakennukset ilmentävät paikan menneisyyttä ja nykyisyyttä, yhteiskunnan arvojen muutosta sekä yksilön sosiaalista ympäristöä. Yppärilän teoksia on mm. Kiasman, Tampereen Taidemuseon ja Turun Taidemuseon kokoelmissa sekä julkisia taideteoksia Porissa, Tampereella ja Kangasalalla.

The Charred exhibition examines transience and the experience of alienation. The title refers to concrete destruction and mental resentment.

“In the works, I approach the subject through dying rural places and disappearing buildings, reflecting on a time where certain areas and activities do not keep up with a changing society.”

The buildings that have been left empty are signs of a transition that stand between history and the future. The works reflect experiences and phenomena in which the sense of belonging to the surrounding world has been shaken.

The exhibition presents for the first time the video work Poltto (Burning), which documents destruction of the largest artwork of Yppärilä’s career in the landscapes of her childhood. The act of burning functioned as a protest against the cultural funding cuts that began in 2024. At the same time, the video subtly conveys the mental landscape of Northern Ostrobothnia and family relationships. Working together and fragments of spoken sentences reveal the bonds and distances that people and the surrounding world have with each other.

The exhibition reflects broader social phenomena, from rural depopulation to the longing for connection and reflection on the meaning of art. Despite the serious topics, the overall tone seeks to evoke gentleness and compassion.

Jenni Yppärilä is a Helsinki-based visual artist best known for her three-dimensional paintings depicting buildings. Since 2012, she has documented her observations of the built environment in Finland and abroad. Yppärilä’s interest in buildings is primarily sociological. Buildings express the past and present of a place, the change in values of society and the social environment of the individual. Yppärilä’s works are included in several collections, including Kiasma, Tampere Art Museum, and Turku Art Museum, and she has created public artworks in Pori, Tampere, and Kangasala.
