Kuvataiteilija Sirja Mobergin näyttelyssä nähdään kamerattomia ja ”hitaita valokuvia” kuten kemigrammi-, lumen- ja maaperäkromatografia vedoksia sekä valokuvasta ja maaperästä rakentuva installaatio. Teokset käsittelevät metsämaisemaan piiloutunutta historiaa maaperään kytkeytyvän taide & tiede dialogin ja geomantian kautta. Mobergia kiehtoo valokuvan toimijuus todellisuuden paljastajana, piilottajana ja rajaajana.
Galleria Ars Liberan Light Geomancy-näyttelyssä siilinjärveläislähtöinen Sirja Moberg (TaM) syventyy kamerattoman valokuvan kestoisuuteen, materiaalisuuteen sekä näkymättömän luonnon tarkasteluun. Näyttelyn valokuvat ovat elollisten organismien aikaansaamia ja valon piirtämiä jälkiä valokuvapaperille. Jäljet rinnastuvat geomantiaan, joka on muinainen ennustamisen tapa maahan heitetyistä tikuista, kivistä tai hiekasta sekä niiden tulkitsemisesta. Valokuva- ja biotaiteen muotona Moberg käyttää maaperäkromatografia–menetelmää, jossa maa-, metsäaines- ja turvenäytteet muodostavat paperille maaperän visuaalisen ”muistijäljen”. Kromatografiat tehdään valoherkälle filtteripaperille, johon on imeytetty kemiallinen seos maata ja turvetta, sammalta, jäkälää tai naavaa muodostaen pyöreän ja ainutlaatuisen kuvan. Tämä valokuvakemiaa hyödyntävä ja alunperin tieteen tarkoituksiin kehitetty, sekä Mobergin eteenpäin muovaama, tekniikka kuvastaa maaperään piiloutunutta elämää.
Työhuonetyöskentelynsä ohella Moberg toteuttaa kenttätyömatkoja Etelä-Suomen vanhimpiin metsiin yhteistyössä paleoekologi Jemina Djupsjöbackan kanssa. Tutkija analysoi siitepölynäytteitä metsämaan soistumien turpeesta, minkä avulla voidaan jäljittää metsän vaiheita, mennyttä kasvillisuutta, ilmastovaikutuksia ja metsänhoidon historiaa. Moberg taas ammentaa virikkeitä tästä meneillään olevasta tutkimuksesta sekä tieteen ja taiteen dialogista, ja hyödyntää tutkimusnäytteitä teoksien valmistusmateriaaleina, mistä näyttelyssä on esillä lopputuloksia. Lisäksi vuodesta 2022 lähtien Moberg on kunnioittavasti kerännyt luonnonmateriaaleja metsistä ja luonnonsuojelualueilta, meteoriitti-kraatterijärviltä sekä Saamenmaan luonnosta teoskokonaisuutta varten. ”Käytän metsistä keräämääni turvetta, hiekkaa, kiviä ja kasveja sekä kemiallisia seoksia kuvan valmistumisen materiaaleina ilman kameraa kehittyvissä valokuvissani. Valotan luonnossa, sisätiloissa tai pimiössä yleensä vanhentunutta valokuvapaperia. Kamerattomien ja käsityönä syntyvien valokuvien kautta ajattelen työskentelyni olevan eräänlaista alkemiaa ja valokuvan pohjimmaisen olemuksen pohtimista” Moberg kertoo.

Sirja Moberg (s. 1989 Siilinjärvi) on Helsingissä asuva kuvataiteilija. Mobergin teoksia on ollut esillä useissa yksityis- ja ryhmänäyttelyissä Suomessa ja ulkomailla, kuten Porvoon taidehallissa, Luonnontieteellisessä Keskusmuseossa, Valokuvataiteen museossa ja Vanhassa Munch Museossa Oslossa, missä hän on ollut myös Nordic Analog Network-pimiöresidenssissä. Hän valmistui taiteen maisteriksi Aalto-yliopistosta vuonna 2020, ja taiteen kandiksi Turun AMK:n Taideakatemiasta vuonna 2015 erikoistuen valokuvaan kummassakin koulutuksessa. Moberg opiskelee Helsingin Yliopiston Julkisen taiteen Taideasiantuntijan erikoistumisopinnoissa (2025–) ja hän on Suomen Biotaiteen Seuran hallituksen varapuheenjohtaja.

At Sirja Moberg’s exhibition, one encounters camera-less and “slow photographs” such as chemigram, lumen, and soil chromatography prints, as well as an installation built from photography and soil. The works explore the hidden history of the forest landscape through a dialogue between art and science, connected to the soil, and geomancy. Moberg is fascinated by the agency of photography as a revealer, concealer, and delimeter of reality.
In the Light Geomancy exhibition at Galleria Ars Libera Moberg delves into the durability and materiality of camera-less photography, and examination of the invisible nature. Moberg often works on long-term projects in the expanded field of photography, bioart, installation, and video. The photographs in the exhibition are traces of living organisms drawn by light onto photographic paper. These traces parallel geomancy, an ancient divination method involving the casting and interpretation of sticks, stones, or sand. As a form of photographic and bioart, Moberg employs soil chromatography, a method where soil, forest materials, and peat samples create a visual “memory trace” of the earth on paper. The chromatographs are made on light-sensitive filter paper absorbed with a chemical mixture of soil, peat, moss, lichen, or lichen, forming a circular and unique image. This photochemistry technique, originally developed for scientific purposes and adapted by Moberg, reflects the hidden life concealed in the soil.
In addition to working in her studio, Moberg undertakes fieldwork in some of Southern Finland’s
old growth forests in collaboration with paleoecologist Jemina Djupsjöbacka. The researcher analyzes pollen samples from peat in forest bogs, which can trace the phases of the forest, past vegetation, climate impacts, and the history of forestry. The artist draws inspiration from this ongoing research and the dialogue between science and art, utilizing research samples as materials for her works—some of which are on display in the exhibition. Since 2020, Moberg has also respectfully collected natural materials from forests and nature reserves, meteorite crater lakes, and the nature of Sápmi for her body of work.
“I use peat, sand, stones, and plants I gather from forests, as well as chemical mixtures, as materials for my camera-less photographs. I expose the photographs in nature, indoors, or in a darkroom, typically using expired photographic paper. Through camera-less and handcrafted photographs, I see my work as kind of alchemy and a reflection on the fundamental essence of photography,” Moberg explains.
The exhibition is supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
Sirja Moberg (born 1989 in Siilinjärvi) is a visual artist based in Helsinki. Her works have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Finland and abroad, including Porvoo Art Hall, the Finnish Museum of Natural History, the Finnish Museum of Photography, and the Old Munch Museum in Oslo, where Moberg has also participated in the Nordic Analog Network darkroom residency. She graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from Aalto University in 2020 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Turku University of Applied Sciences Art Academy in 2015, specializing in photography in both programs. Moberg is currently studying in the Public Art specialization program at the University of Helsinki (2025–) and serves as the vice-chair of the board of the Finnish Bioart Society.
