Yasushi Koyaman yksityisnäyttely Herra Otso avautuu Galleria Ars Liberassa perjantaina 27.5.2022.
”Muinaisina aikoina karhua palvottiin metsän jumalana, niin Suomessa kuin Japanissakin. Japanilaisen alkuperäiskansan, ainujen karhufestivaali oli rituaaliseremonia ja festivaali, jossa karhun sielu sekä metsän henget lähetettiin tästä maailmasta toiseen maailmaan. Ihminen on uskonut, että karhuissa on jotain pyhää. He ovat puhuneet karhun kautta metsän näkymättömälle elämälle. Karhumaailma, jonka luon puusta käsin talttaa käyttäen, on mielestäni rituaalinen seremonia metsän kunnioittamiseksi.
Näyttelyssä esitän puusta, kivestä ja keramiikasta tehtyjä karhuveistoksia sekä koivupuusta tehdyn installaation karhumetsän ilmentämiseksi. Suurin työ on puuveistos nimeltä Karhun kalaonni (155 x 50 x 50 cm). Tein sen Suvisaaren venetehtaalla, jonka Kuopion muotoiluakatemian taiteilijaresidenssi järjesti minulle. Teosta ovat inspiroineet Kuopion pronssinen, kaloja kantava Veljmies-patsas, kalakukko, muikkuravintola Sammon kalaruoat sekä ainujen karhuveistokset. Karhun kalaonni -veistos lahjoitetaan näyttelyn jälkeen Kuopion yliopistolliselle sairaalalle.
Näyttelyn nimi on Herra Otso. Ajattelen metsää tilana, jossa ihminen kohtaa äitiluonnon. Me ihmiset olemme osa luontoa ja osa maapalloa. Olemme kohdanneet ilmastonmuutoksen ja luonnonkatastrofit. Ajattelen uudelleen ihmisen ja luonnon suhdetta käyttämällä metaforaa karhusta, Herra Otsosta, metsän jumalana kansanperinteen ja antropologian näkökulmasta. Näyttelyssäni haluan ilmaista karhun metsäantropologiaa Suomessa ja Japanissa.
Tekemiäni eläinveistoksia on kuvailtu söpöiksi, viattomiksi ja humoristisiksi. Suurin osa puuveistoksista on tehty yhdestä puusta käsin talttaa käyttäen. Olen oppinut perinteistä puunveistoa maorien, ainujen, székelien ja suomalaisten kuvanveistäjiltä. Suomalainen luonto, muotoilu ja kuvitus, suomalaisten taiteilijoiden Katja Tukiaisen ja Kim Simonssonin taide sekä Muumit ovat myös inspiroineet minua. Myös japanilaisella mangalla, animella ja Yoshitomo Naran neo-pop-taiteella on ollut vahva vaikutus taiteelliseen kieleeni.
Näyttelyä ja työskentelyäni tukee Taiteen edistämiskeskus. Kaksi näyttelyn veistosta on tehty Serlachius-residenssissä Mäntässä.”
Biografia lyhyesti:
Valmistuin kuvataiteilijaksi Saimaan AMK (LAB AMK):sta vuonna 2010 ja ylemmästä AMK:sta vuonna 2016. Kuulun Suomen Kuvanveistäjäliittoon, MUU ry:hyn, Helsingin Taiteilijaseuraan, Teollisuustaiteen Liitto Ornamoon ja Kuvasto ry:hyn.

Yasushi Koyama’s solo exhibition Herra Otso opens at Galleria Ars Libera on Friday 27.5.2022
”In ancient times, the bear was worshiped as the god of the forest. It is the same in Finland and Japan. The bear festival of Japanese native Ainu was a ritual ceremony and a festival to send the soul of the bear and spirits of the forest from this world to another world. Human beings have entrusted something sacred to bears. They have talked with an invisible existence of the forest through a bear. I consider that the bear world which I create with wood by hand chisels is a ritual ceremony to respect the forest.
In the exhibition, I show bear sculptures from wood, stone, ceramic, and an installation of white birch wood to express the bear forest. The largest work is the wood sculpture Fishing luck of the bear (155 x 50 x 50 cm). I created it at the Suvisaari boat factory which was introduced to me by the Kuopio Academy of Design. The work has been influenced by Kuopio’s fish-holding bronze statue Veljmies, the kalakukko delicacy, fish restaurant Sampo and Ainu bear sculptures. Fishing luck of the bear will be donated to Kuopio University Hospital after the exhibition.
The title of the exhibition is Herra Otso (Mister Otso). I consider the forest as a space where human beings meet mother nature. We human beings are a part of nature and a part of the Earth. We have faced climate change and natural disasters. I rethink of the relationship between human and nature by using the metaphor of the bear, Herra Otso, as the god of forest through the viewpoint of folklore and anthropology. In my exhibition, I would like to express the forest anthropology of the bear in Finland and Japan.
My animal figures are described as ”cute, innocent and humorous”. Most of my wood works are made from one piece of wood by using hand chisels. I have learned traditional wood sculpturing from Maori, Ainu, Székely and Finnish sculptors. Finnish nature, design & illustration, Finnish artists Katja Tukiainen & Kim Simonsson, and Finnish cartoon Moomin have inspired me. Similarly, the Japanese Manga, Anime, Yoshitomo Nara’s neo-pop art have also strongly influenced my artistic language.
The exhibition and my work are supported by Arts Promotion Centre Finland. Two of the sculptures in the exhibition were made at the Serlachius residency in Mänttä.”
Short biography:
Koyama graduated from Saimaa University of Applied Sciences (LAB University of Applied Sciences) as a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2010 and as a Master of Fine Arts in 2016. Koyama is a member of the association of Finnish sculptors, The artist association MUU ry, Helsinki Artist Association, Ornamo and Kuvasto ry.
