”Maalaukseni saavat usein alkunsa puhelimen muistioon kirjoitetuista lyhyistä sanallisista ideoista. Ideat tulevat nopeasti, kun taas kuvien parissa työskentely on hidasta. Joskus olen työskennellyt temaattisesti, löyhään narratiiviin perustuen. Toisinaan lähestymistapani perustuu muutamiin kuva-aiheisiin, joita varioimalla työskentelen sarjallisesti.
Galleria Ars Liberan näyttelyssä lähestymistapani on orgaanisempi. Esillä on keskenään erilaisia, eri tekniikoilla toteutettuja maalauksia, sekä pieniä kolmiulotteisia teoksia. Yhden perusidean sijaan näyttelyn teokset edustavat, päiväkirjamerkintöjen tapaan, teoksesta toiseen vaihtuvia ajatuksia ja tunnelmia. Kokonaisuutena niistä hahmottuu kuva ajatuksista, joita olen viime aikoina pyöritellyt.
Näyttelyn nimi For Now viittaa johonkin tilapäiseen ja keskeneräiseen. Elämä on prosessi jossa mikään ei ole pysyvää. Olemme aina liikkeessä ja muutoksen keskellä. Viime aikoina olen miettinyt paljon aikaa ja siihen liittyvää vääjäämättömyyttä. Ajan kuluminen on osa jokapäiväistä olemistamme, nykyhetken kietoutuessa menneisyyteen ja toisaalta kurkottaessa alati kohti tulevaa. Välillä on kuitenkin hyvä olla tässä hetkessä, rikki ja keskeneräinen, mutta kuitenkin olemassa.
Näyttelyssä on esillä kolmenlaisia teoksia. Metsäaiheiset maalaukset, jotka edustavat eskapismia ja yritystä paeta kieltä edeltävään lapsuuden maailmaan. Sisätiloihin sijoittuvat maalaukset, jotka ovat yrityksiä tutkia ihmisen psyykkistä sisätilaa. Esinemäiset, kolmiulotteiset teokset ovat syntyneet maalausprosessin ohella, eräänlaisena sivutuotteena.
Koen olevani työskentelyssäni vapautumassa pitkään samoja kehiä kiertäneistä ajatuksista. En tiedä välittyykö tämä vielä käsillä olevista teoksista, mutta haluaisin ajatella että joitain viitteitä tulevasta on jo nähtävissä.”
Topi Juntunen on syntynyt Suomussalmella, opiskellut Lahden Taideinstituutissa ja Taideyliopiston Kuvataideakatemiassa (KuM 2021). Tätä ennen hän opiskeli vuoden ajan Limingan taidekoulussa. Vuodesta 2022 lähtien hän on asunut ja työskennellyt Kuopiossa.
”My paintings often start with short verbal ideas written in a phone memo. Ideas might come quickly, but working on the images is slow. Sometimes I have worked thematically, based on a specific narrative. At times I have been working serially, varying the same motif in the form of several paintings.
In the Gallery Ars Libera exhibition, my approach has been more organic, not so much implemented according to a specific formula. I have worked on paintings that are different from each other, executed in different formats using different techniques, as well as small three-dimensional works. Instead of one basic idea, the works in the exhibition represent thoughts and moods that change from one work to another, like diary entries. As a whole, they sketch a picture of the thoughts I have been preoccupied with lately.
The name of the exhibition For Now refers to something temporary and unfinished. Life is a process in which nothing is permanent. We are always in motion and in the midst of change. Lately I have been thinking a lot about time and the inevitability associated with it. The passage of time is part of our everyday existence, with the present intertwined with the past, while at the same time reaching toward the future. Sometimes, however, it is good to be in this moment, broken and unfinished, but still.
The exhibition presents three kinds of works. Paintings with forest motifs, which embody escapism and an attempt to return to the pre-linguistic world of childhood. Paintings set in interiors, which are attempts to explore the psychic inner space of the human being. And object-like, three-dimensional works, created alongside the painting process as a kind of by-product.
In my practice, I feel I am beginning to free myself from thoughts that have long circled in the same patterns. I don’t know if this is already evident in the paintings in this exhibition, but I would like to think that some hints of what is to come can already be seen.”
Topi Juntunen was born in Suomussalmi, studied at the Lahti Institute of Fine Arts (BFA 2011) and the Academy of Fine Arts of Uniarts Helsinki (MFA 2021). Before that, he studied for a year at the Liminka Art School. He has been living and working in Kuopio since 2022.
