Humberg photographed the series in Greenland at the Zackenberg Research Station where she collaborated with biologist Riikka Kaartinen. Together they conducted a small test using local pollinators and the mountain avens.

The mountain avens is an abundant species in Greenland, and many species rely on it for nutrition, including pollinating insects. In the absence of bees, muscid flies (house flies) are the most important pollinators. However, biologists have shown that the number of muscid flies in Zackenberg has decreased by up to 80 % within only a few decades. This is likely largely due to climate change. Greenland is an ideal place for studying the effects of climate change as it has been estimated that polar regions warm up faster compared to the rest of the globe. Also, ecological communities in the arctic areas are relatively simple, which makes research easier.

The aim was to visualise how the decreased number of muscid flies might affect the pollination success of the mountain avens. Humberg and Kaartinen selected avens tufts that were approximately equal in size and then placed fluorescent pigment into some of the flowers. The pigment was expected to stick to the pollinators in a same way pollen would, enabling transport from one flower to another. There were two test groups: In group A there were 10 muscids, one dagger fly, one hoverfly, and one mosquito (13 pollinators in total). Group B was otherwise similar but there were only 2 muscids (5 pollinators in total). Humberg took baseline photos of the tufts inside a dimmable field studio that was lit only with ultraviolet lamps. Immediately afterwards the tufts were covered with gauze tents and pollinators released inside. The pollinators were left to spread the pigment for 72 hours, after which they were collected and the avens tufts reimaged by Humberg. The photographs show that pollination success appears lower in the tents that had less muscid flies.

The project has received funding from the Finnish Cultural Foundation, the Arts Promotion Center Finland and the Finnish Art Society.

BIO

Paula Humberg (b. 1983) is a photo artist based in Sipoo.
