The artists point out that people are ashamed of revealing the names of their mothers in traditional Arab culture. In general, a man must hide the body of his wife, his mother and his daughters within the confines of the home, or in clothes, out of view of other men. This invisibility extends also to names. A woman’s name is considered part of her private self and, as her entire identity, must be hidden. “We see this practice as a first sign of structural violence. We are proud of the names of our mothers and women generally,” say the artists. “It is not specific to us, so it’s not about our own mothers’ names, but all women whose names have been hidden from us.”

“We left Iraq after Saddam’s sister was killed amidst the violence that enveloped the country. Following our departure, we experienced an overwhelming pain, guilt and regret as we meditated on the enormous demands society was placing on women in general,” say Kholod Hawash and Saddam Jumaily. “Upon moving to Helsinki we began to reflect from a distance on these experiences, both within our shared family and wider society, from within a European context where women are more supported to express themselves freely and to lead their own lives, free to a larger extent from the oppression of men.”

The opening of the exhibition will be held on the the 10th of September, with opening words by Saastamoinen Foundation board-member Seppo Karvinen, and director of Ars Libera Toni Ledentsa, while the co-directors of Artists at Risk, Marita Muukkonen and Ivor Stodolsky, will introduce the artists.

This exhibition is supported by the Saastamoinen Foundation.

Kholod Hawash is a self-taught textile artist.
